What a Well-Kept Record Does
Objects Become Legible
A watch with no record is just a watch. The same watch with a description, a photograph, and a date of acquisition becomes part of a household's documented history.
Clarity Across Generations
When a catalog exists, younger family members understand what they are inheriting and why it carries meaning. The record does the explaining.
A Stable Reference
Photographs, condition notes, and provenance descriptions create a stable reference that memory alone cannot hold over many years.
Archival Standards, Household Scale
We apply the same organizational logic used in professional archives — adapted for a household's pace, space, and collection size.
Your Work, Properly Supported
We provide the structure, materials, and guidance. The cataloging and the decisions about what to record always remain the household's own.
Rooted in Penang
Based in George Town, we understand the layered cultural and familial histories that Penang households carry. Our approach is informed by the region's particular material heritage.
Frequently Asked
What kinds of objects can be cataloged?
Almost any household object with personal or familial significance — jewelry, watches, furniture, textiles, correspondence, ceramics, photographs, tools, and documents. We help you develop a consistent format for describing what you have, whatever its form.
Do I need to bring my objects to your studio?
For the workshop, participants attend at the studio and apply what they learn at home. For the Family Album Project, we work in your home or at the studio — whichever suits the household. The subscription includes quarterly visits to your premises.
How long does the Family Album Project take?
The project involves four sessions, typically scheduled across four to six weeks depending on the household's availability. Each session lasts two to three hours. The printed album is delivered at the final session.
Who can enroll in the cataloging workshop?
The workshop is open to any adult household member interested in organizing and preserving family objects. No prior knowledge of archiving is needed. Groups from the same household are welcome to attend together — please mention this when enquiring.
Is the subscription available for households outside Penang?
Currently our visits are limited to households in Penang. If you are located further away, we are happy to discuss whether a modified arrangement can work. Please enquire and we will consider it on a case-by-case basis.
Do you alter or restore the items you catalog?
We do not restore, repair, clean, or alter any object. Our work is purely organizational — describing, photographing, labeling, and recording. The objects remain exactly as they are. We do not file or submit documents on any household's behalf.
How is my family's information handled?
All information gathered during our projects remains entirely yours. We do not share, publish, or retain copies of household records, photographs, or personal data beyond what is needed to complete your project. Please see our Privacy Policy for details.
